Arbor Lights

The Arbor Lights is a semi-permanent environment created in collaboration with The Wabash Lights arts organization in Chicago. The project was installed along the waterfront outside of Chicago's iconic Navy Pier and consists of hundreds of custom-fabricated LED leaves arranged amidst the tree canopy, bringing wonderland liminality to those walking below.

The interactivity of The Arbor Lights is in the hands of participants. To do this, we designed a custom SMS platform that allows them to message the installation and choose between a  variety of patterns, abstract 3D shapes, and color gradients.

All they have to do is send a text message to the number 312-626-7592, using a list of commands that are listed on a sign by the tree.

To change the color, text a color such as red to 312-626-7592.
To change the shape, text a shape like box.
For a combo, text shape and color.
Options will respond with a help message.

Here are the available parameters one can control:

Shapes: donut, wave, explode, sweep, box, updown, leftright, full
Textures:  solid, twinkle, pulse, and chase
Speed: slowest, slower, slow, medium, fast, faster, fastest
Color: color name like red
